Tooting Deserves Better!
The Liberal Democrat Graveney Focus Team has been campaigning for local residents in Tooting's Graveney ward since the 1980s. It has been talking to residents, taking up issues on their behalf and producing the Focus newsletter. Its activities have been holding both the council and the local councillors to account. Now that Council elections are approaching on 6th May 2010, the team will put up three candidates, Jeremy Ambache, Stephanie Dearden and Surinder Rhode. Jeremy and Stephanie contested the last council election in 2006, and came close to beating Labour, with the Conservatives trailing in third place. They have been campaigning in the ward ever since. Surinder is a local businessman and has lived in the ward for over 15 years, first owning a convenience store and then offering a financial advice service. The Focus team could do a lot more for local residents if elected to the council, where they would have much more influence. The issues they want to take up include improving Tooting town centre, extending police cover for local residents, improving the state of streets and pavements, and taking action against lorries and speeding cars in residential streets. They are committed to providing proper feedback to residents through regular newsletters and mailings, not just at election time. They stand for a new type of politics in Wandsworth, where councillors engage much more with residents, not just their usual supporters, and all year every year.
