Tooting Bec fireworks axed in Council Tax crunch

6.03.18pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 6th Apr 2007

Fireworks

The Guy Fawkes fireworks at Tooting Bec Common have been cancelled by Wandsworth Council. This is part of a series of cutbacks by the Council after the increase in government grant fell below inflation.

"This means that more people will be tempted to buy their own fireworks - with an increased risk of injuries," says local Lib Dem spokes person Stephanie Dearden. "The Council Tax goes up, but people are getting less. The Tories never mentioned this at last year's election!"
